Fit for life parents fitness challenge

As a 52 year old father to two teenage girls, husband and self-employed business owner, I know the time pressures of being a parent, provider and spouse.

And, up until 6 months ago, I reacted the same way perhaps you have: by putting everyone and everything else ahead of looking after myself.

For almost 5 years, I was simply too busy for the gym or to exercise regularly. Are you taking your health and fitness for granted like this?

Last August, I stopped being able to ignore the bad shape I was in. I went on holiday with a more active friend and just couldn’t keep up.

I had already noticed that, when it was time to be the man and do the heavy lifting, I struggled.

And, when I tried to join in physical games, I just didn’t have the lungs for it.

I had pains in my shoulders and knees that flared up – even if I just did a little gardening or DIY.

It felt like my body was already in gradual decline and I’d have to accept being less and less active.

Retirement was going to be pretty boring. And at 51½ years old, that was still 15 years away!

But then something changed.

Firstly, I learned what my strength problem was: Sarcopenia – the insidious gradual loss of muscle mass that can begin before 40 years old.

Secondly, I forced myself to let go of beliefs that had stopped me getting started for years:

  • That recovery means only rest (active recovery is actually better!).
  • That I didn’t have enough time to get in shape, because I didn’t have hours and hours to spare on fitness.

You see, I used to believe you need to spend 3 hours in the gym a week (bare minimum) lifting huge weights to build strength and muscle.

But, my progress over the last 6 months has proved that totally wrong.

My journey is proof that 75mins a week at home works. You can transform your body and fitness – even in your fifties!

And that’s why I’d like you to take up this challenge.

Because, I don’t think you’re ready to welcome old age yet.
